Bristol Office Space Renovation Approved

Two prominent blocks of office space in Bristol, on King Street overlooking Queen Square have been approved for demolition. These were considered a major eyesore and their replacements should contribute positively to the changing skyline of the city.

These are rated as Grade II office space, and were converted in the 1960s. The basic structure is red brick and pebbledash, and they were attached to the Georgian Queen Anne House. The building profiles are now considered dingy and hence will be taken out for new office space to be built in the same location.

Plans which had been proposed in order to renovate the structures were shot down last year due to the concern over heritage value of the site. However, the Bristol City Council’s development control committee has approved the plans for the demolition recently.

As per the new plans, the buildings are made up of office blocks five and six storeys high, but grouped together as separate buildings on the same site, as compared to the previous structure of a single block of offices. The new office planning has been carefully considered to incorporate a design with slate fronts and natural stone walls, in order to maintain a resemblance with the Queen Anne House, and to preserve the overall historic look of the site.

With a new basement car park to house 45 bikes and 27 cars accessible from King William Avenue, the new office building will feature an additional 1,000 square metres of office space as compared to the current setup.

Undoubtedly, you’ve come across the idea that a goal should be written down to be effective.

Most of us walk around with a number of UNWRITTEN goals that interfere with our overall performance. I just noticed one of my own as I was returning from putting some laundry in the dryer.

Right now, I have about 388 articles at an ezine site, and I want to make that 400, as soon as possible.

But I haven’t written it down, yet, and it is actually conflicting with some of my written goals, like making certain telephone contacts, setting appointments, and doing some strategic marketing.

All of the things I just mentioned are “officially” more important to me than writing the remaining dozen articles, but it is this latter task that I enjoy the most.

I’m energized by writing more than by calling or planning, at least at this minute. And I can feel the pull of this unwritten goal more profoundly than its formally inscribed cousins.

So, what should I do?

Either I should write it down, placing it at the top of my list, or I should dally no more and just start banging out these pieces.

I know this, until I acknowledge and straighten out my very powerful unwritten goals, I won’t have much momentum in getting my formal ones accomplished.

Doing The Right Thing

One of my favorite things to write about is the topic of leadership and one of my favorite business theorists is Peter Drucker. Peter Drucker has authored more than 35 books and is considered by many to be the founding father on the study of management practices. In this blog post I will breakdown one of my favorite “Druckerisms” which states that: “managers do things right while leaders do the right things.”

At first glance the above Druckerism might not seem to be all that insightful, but I believe it is very powerful observation that highlights the difference in philosophies between most managers and leaders.

Doing things right is a trait that causes managers to be focused on security and security is most often underpinned by fear based motivations. Doing things right will cause managers to be safe and politically correct in approach. It is this fear based motivation that causes managers to protect turf as opposed to gain ground, to control as opposed to inspire, and to refine as opposed to create. Doing things right leads to comfort zone management that completely inhibits the ability to innovate.

Doing the right things is a trait that causes leaders to be guided by their instincts, principles, values and desire to achieve. Leaders motivated by doing the right things are not risk adverse, rarely politically correct and they thrive on shaking things up. It is leaders doing the right things that innovate, motivate, create and inspire. Doing the right thing is often times controversial, but true leaders are not daunted by the thought of conflict as are most managers. Leaders guided by doing the right thing are willing to step-up and make the big decisions that open markets, exploit opportunities and drive innovation.

If you’re not sure whether you are doing things right or doing the right things take yourself through the following personal assessment:

1. When was the last time you witnessed something that you didn’t agree with but kept quiet on the issue to protect yourself rather than voicing your concern in order to protect the enterprise?

2. When was the last time you rocked the boat by design? Rocking the boat by default or by mistake doesn’t count…

3. When was the last time you drove innovation? Hint: purchasing a new software application is not innovation…

4. If a survey was taken of your peers and subordinates would they refer to you as a leader who inspires, motivates and mentors or a manager who exercises authority and control?

It is important to realize that everyone has fears. Ask anyone who has ever been in combat and they’ll tell you that it is being in touch with their innate sense of fear that kept them alive. However as important as it is to be aware of your fears, as a leader you cannot allow yourself to be ruled by them.

All Presenting is Persuasive!

After stumbling a bit, most speakers are able to name the purpose of any
presentation they might give. However, most really stumble when asked if their
presentations are meant to persuade anyone of anything.

The answer, 99% of the time, is YES. And yet most presenters don’t realize it. As a
result, the world is full of “information-only” presentations that do NOT achieve the
presenters’ or the audience’s expectations or needs. Information in itself does not
lead people to understand, believe, or act. Information alone is a “data-dump,” not
a presentation.

Think about it. Why give a presentation at all if you are not attempting to change the
audience’s behaviors or attitudes?

Persuasion versus Coercion

one melts, the other breaks into pieces.”

The term “persuasion” can turn presenters off. Many subconsciously equate it with
coercion. And in fact both do share the same continuum of strategies that seek
compliance from the listener. Yet persuasion, when done well, answers the
audience’s questions, address its concerns, and fulfills its needs…while achieving
the presenter’s goals.

Persuasion is nonadversarial in nature. Because it does not command, negotiate, or
coerce, those who are persuaded almost always feel comfortable and satisfied with
the outcomes. Why do they feel satisfied? Because the speaker has done her
homework. She KNOWS what the audience needs and cares about. The presentation
moves out of being a data dump and into the realm of dialogue, even if no formal
“Q & A” takes place.

Credibility as Persuasion

“Character may almost be called the most effective means of persuasion.” Aristotle

Persuasion is more than strategy or technique. Your credibility factor underlies all
persuasion. All the charisma in the world falls flat if the audience doesn’t perceive
you as being credible.

Empirical research (McCroskey, Holdrige & Toomb, 1974) describes five dimensions
that must be evident in order for a speaker to be credible:

• Competence: the degree to which you are perceived to be an expert.

• Character: the degree to which you are perceived as a reliable, essentially
trustworthy message source.

• Composure: the degree to which you are perceived as being able to maintain
emotional control.

• Extroversion: the degree to which you are perceived as bold, outgoing, and
dynamic.

• Sociability: the degree to which the audience perceives you as someone with
whom they could be friends.

Remember that the effectiveness of your presentation is really about building a
relationship with the audience. These five dimensions of credibility are far more
effective tools than PowerPoint or any other technology. People are “buying” (or not
buying) you.

What’s in it for Them?

Jerry Weissman, in his book “Presenting to Win: The Art of Telling Your Story” calls
persuasion audience advocacy. By that, he means the ability to view yourself, your
company, your story, and your presentation through your audience’s eyes. You must
be able to answer the question “What’s in it for them?” at every juncture of your
presentation.

If you want to move the uninformed, dubious, or resistant audience to understand,
believe, and act, (and what speaker doesn’t?)
you must:

1. Know your audience.

Do your homework. Find out what your audience cares about, what it wants to
know, what its concerns are.

2. Link every piece of information to your audience’s needs.

Here’s a helpful test.

1. First, determine your next presentation’s purpose. Write it down. Reflect on it.
Change it if necessary.

2. Then, compose the first draft of your presentation. Focus on the purpose as you
write.

3. Go through your presentation. Every time you provide a piece of data, STOP.
Then ask and answer these questions:

“This is important to them because…” (answer it!)

“So what?” (explain how it benefits the audience.)

4. When you discover information for which you cannot answer these questions, ask
yourself: Does this data help the audience understand, believe, or act? Remove the
data if it does not.

You’re On!

Once you’ve gotten through the test and integrated the answers into your
presentation, be ready to put on your Audience Advocacy hat once again. Select
from the following phrases and insert them into your presentation at the
appropriate times:

“This is important to you because…”

“Why am I telling you this?”

“Who cares? (“You should care, because…”)

You are Credible; You Meet Your Audience’s Needs

Develop and practice the five dimensions of credibility. They are an innate and
natural part of you. A higher awareness of them will increase your effectiveness as a
speaker. Remember to “see, taste, and hear” your presentation as if you are a
member of your own audience. And always ask yourself: What’s in it for them?

Far from being coercive, you are proving yourself to be powerfully aligned with your
audience. Your message will benefit, motivate and move them!
