NTRP Rating Written Description and Evaluators Comments
1.5 – 2.0 You describe yourself as a beginner. You do know how to serve and hit points but you haven’t built any tennis game consistency. You have figured how to keep track of score. You basically love the game and want to meet up with other people who have the same love.
2.5 Needs on-court tennis experience. Has obvious stroke failings but is use to with standard positions for singles and doubles play. 2.5 Learning to judge where the ball is going although tennis court coverage is less than adequate. Can maintain a little rally of weak pace with other tennis tennis players of the same ability.
Admin Comments: Recreational division, About 10% of the players are in this division. You’re an advanced beginner in this category. We hope the minimum ability tennis players have is to be able to serve and maintain a couple stroke rally.
3.0 Reasonably consistent when hitting medium-paced strokes, but isn’t comfortable with all tennis shots and lacks execution when seeking for leading control, depth or might.
Admin Comments: Skilled skill level, About 20% of the players are in this skill level
3.25 You’re in-between 3.0 and 3.5 Tennis Skill grade.
3.5 Has accomplished improved stroke reliability with guiding control on moderate strokes, but still misses depth and variety. Starting to demonstrate more competitive net play, has improved court coverage.
Admin Comments: Competitive1 division, About 40% of the tennis players are in this skill level. The majority of non-trained adult players are at this level.
3.75 You’re in-between 3.5 and 4.0 Skill rating.
Comments: Advanced2 skill level, This skill level appears when the city’s league is big enough and we have sufficient returning players. The addition of this skill level allows the league to fine tune the skill levels and the matches tend to be more evenly matched. Playoff qualifiers play in the Advanced playoffs.
4.0 Has dependable tennis strokes, including directing control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on average shots, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. Occasionally pulls errors when serving. Rallies may be lost due to impatience.
4.5 Starting to master the use of power and spins and beginning to handle pace, has solid footwork, can control depth of strokes and is beginning to vary game plan according to opponents. Can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place the second serve. Tends to over hit on difficult tennis shots.
